Genie, (born April 18, 1957, Los Angeles, California, U.S.), American child raised in social isolation and subject to severe abuse and neglect prior to being discovered by a social worker in 1970. How it all began. Beginning at 20 months old, Genie Wiley's father kept her trapped in one room. She spent the entirety of her time with her arms bound and her ankle tied to the toilet. As a Genie's father, shortly after authorities discovered Genie, shot and killed himself. The suicide only added to the interest in Genie's case.
